Managed to see the Thomas Struth exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery at the weekend and was incredibly impressed. I like the work of many contemporary German photographers from Bernd and Hilla Becher onwards although I have to say I think some of Andreas Gursky’s work is becoming a little over produced and, as a result, a bit saccharine.
I thought the themes explored in this show were very interesting and the compositions superb. I especially liked his images of highly technological subjects, but his portraits, cityscapes and botanical pictures were all very strong.
The other thing that struck me was the actual quality of the photographic prints, I imagine he must still shoot large scale film given the scale and clarity of the work.
On the downside they had sold out of the exhibition catalogue which I was a little bummed about.
